1. Unable to connect to FTP site
when attempting to conntect to the website http://ftp.sitename.com user get an
access denied error
The reason this is not working is because Internet Explorer does not support
porting FTP through HTTP
to correct the issue have the user connect directly to FTP://ftp.sitename.com
then it will work

2. How to repair internet explorer‏
From the run line type the following:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance
then choose the repair option

This does not run on all machines, and will not resolve issues connecting to secure
websites. For those you will still have to run:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll

3. Internet Explorer rendering engine broken - Add/Remove Programs, Help and Support fail‏

Internet Explorer would hang when rendering web pages. Additionally, programs that
depended on the HTML Rendering Engine, such as Add/Remove Programs or Help would
not function.

After disabling many services and restarting the machine, the problem cleared up.
We could no longer reproduce the problem after that point, even after re-enabling
the services.

We speculate that there may have been a resource contention of some type between
multiple services, possibly the BITS and DCOM services, and stopping one of them
allowed the other to finish its work. With one of the services stopped, the other
was able to complete its work, resolving the issue

AUSE:
========
-Customer had downloaded the ISO image from Microsoft from the MSDN partner site.
-Then used WinRAR to extract the files from the ISO.
-The trial version of the E2k7 software is packaged in a self extracting .EXE file
format.
-We do not know if there was an issue with the ISO image itself or perhaps the file
extraction with WinRAR had something to do with it.

RESOLUTION: (Randw)
============
-Download the trial version of the 64 bit software and install it.
-Apply the E2k7 Enterprise or Standard key.
-You can register and download Exchange 2007 evaluation software here:

** Problem Description ***
The user disabled IE enahanced security from add remove programs however still
getting the error message

The users are getting a warning message stating
Microsoft Internet Explorers Enhanced Security Configuration is currently enabled
on your server. This enhanced level of security reduces the risk of attack from
Web-based content that is not secure, but it may also prevent Web sites from
displaying correctly and restrict access to network resources.
1) Set and then Deleted the values

Running the following commands also did not resolve the issue.
rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection IESoftenUser 128
%windir%\inf\IEHARDEN.INF
rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection IESoftenAdmin 128

user.dat
4) Open HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap
check IEHarden Value
if it is set to IEHarden = 1
Changed it to
IEHarden = 0

Unload hive and then creat a new user account.
The problem should be resolved.

========================
The following information is shared by Amitmal from the perf 1 team since we may
continue to have issues even after trying the above steps
=======================
Second Attempt
A working user profile that was created with the normal desktop shell was copied
over to a non working user profile so that the non working profile will get
desirable user profile information needed to properly operate IE. But the issue
came back again as the new profile was being created with the help of the default
profile.

Third Attempt
1) Open registry editor as an administrator
2) Select File>>Load hive
3) Load the following registry hive C:\documents and settings\default
user\ntuser.dat HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Default_Profile
4) Open HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap
Checked IEHarden Value, it was set to IEHarden = 1
Changed it to IEHarden = 0
5) HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap Set IEHarden = 0
6) Exporting the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap
7) Deleting all the entries except IEHarden=0
8) Copying to the following path (Modified)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Default_User\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap with IEHarden=0
Where Default_User is the loaded profile as per Step 3
9) Importing the above key and unloading the default profile
10) Logging in with a new user profile. The new user didn’t got that IE Enhance
Security Warning.
It means that rectifying the Default Profile resolved the issue.

17. How to change Internet Explorer to be the default browser without user interaction‏

*** Problem Description ***
The Customer requires Netscape and Firefox as well as Internet Explorer the be on
his systems. He does not want to allow users to choose what the default browser
should be. We required a way to force this setting.

To resolve this issue we first set the file association for HTM, HTML, and SHTML to
open with Internet Explorer. We then modified the following registry entry to
point iexplore.exe and pushed this out to clients.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command]

Default = "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

18. Cannot access SSL (secure) websites from Internet Explorer - Page cannot be displayed‏:

*** Problem Description ***
## Issue:

When users try to access any SSL-based secure website, they receive:

"Page cannot be displayed - Cannot find server or DNS Error"

If the users profile is deleted and then recreated by logging back in, web
browsing starts working correctly.

## Environment:

XP, 2000, 2003 client or server.
Service pack unimportant.
Internet Explorer version 5, 5.5 or 6
Issue also affects Netscape, Mozilla, and other browsers.

## Cause:

The users Application Data folder cannot be accessed due to misconfigured Shell
Folders registry entries.

## Resolution:

1. Log on as the affected user.
2. Open REGEDIT.
3. Navigate to:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell
Folders]

4. Verify that AppData points to the correct path for this profile.

ex: C:\Documents and Settings\nedpyle\Application Data

5. Navigate to:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell
Folders]

6. Verify that AppData points to the correct path for this profile

ex: %USERPROFILE%\Application Data

7. After correcting the two profile paths above, logoff the user.
8. Log back on as that same user.
9. Verify that the browser can now connect as expected without issues.

## Additional Steps for the Enterprise:

Folder Redirection policy can be used to correct this enterprise wide.
If the earlier troubleshooting step of deleting the profile and recreating it did
not work, its very possible that Folder Redirection of AppData is setting this
value back to an invalid path.

## Notes:

This issue is commonly treated as a corrupt profile problem, and the resolution
provided to customers is to delete the profile. There is no such thing as a
corrupt profile that still loads successfully for the user. Deleting profiles is
not a valid resolution to any issue, nor is deleting NTUSER.DAT. They should simply
be treated as steps to narrowing down the root cause.

Had Q303807 modified as well.

21. Internet Explorer could not open the search page‏

*** Problem Description ***
Internet Explorer would not browse to the Internet.
Each attempt to connect to a website, after the Home Page gave an error
"Internet Explorer could not open the search page."

Adding the Proxy settings back into
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
would not resolve.
The settings were being removed by some other installed program.

Resolution:
Customer found that the issue was caused by "RAC PPP Connection Using RACPORT"

The RAC port stands for Remote Access Connection port. It is a port used by
Dell Open Manage software to manage servers centrally.

We disabled this software and now the server are connecting to the Internet and
using the ProxyServer correctly.

22. Links and pictures appears as a red X in Internet Explorer (Windows XP)‏

*** Problem Description ***
The customer clicks on certain links on a web page and gets the following error
message:

"Action Cancelled.
Internet Explorer was unable to link to the webpage that you requested. The page
might be temporarily unavailable"

And also he doesn have pictures or ad-banners that are links. He just has an X
mark instead of the object

Cause:

The resolution for this issue is quite simple. This issue is caused mostly because
of corrupted host files. The "Action Cancelled" message is usually generated when
an entry in your HOSTS file has blocked a 3rd party ad server.

A hosts file redirects any sites on the list to 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0 if you have
chosen to use that.

It keeps you from visiting addresses on the list. Instead of going to the real
Address, your Browser is redirected to your own computers address and therefore no
Connection is made to that site.

Resolution:

Step1: Delete Cookies, Temporary Internet files and clear history from Internet
Options.

Step2: Set the Security settings to default and also go to the Advanced tab and
Click Restore Defaults and then it’s a good idea to uncheck Enable third party
Browser extensions (Requires Restart)

Step3: Go to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc folder and delete the files hosts
And lmhosts and then restart the computer.

Now try surfing using Internet Explorer and you should have the problem resolved.

23. Internet Explorer Has Encounter a Problem and Needs to close Winshow.dll‏

*** Problem Description ***
When you click on Internet explorer, you recieve the message "Internet Explorer Has
Encountered A Problem and Needs To Close"

To test to make sure this is the case, follow these steps.
1.) Safe Mode with Networking (regular safe mode works too)
2.) Open IE (It should open under Safe Mode)
3.) Disable 3rd Party Browser Extensions, and reboot to regular mode.
4.) Open IE, It should open now.
5.) Take a look in the Add/Remove programs and cross reference unknown programs
With google adding "spyware" to the program name. (ie: "WinShow" "spyware"
6.) Remove anything that returns as spyware (this is how i found WinShow)
7.) Renable 3rd party extensions and reboot.
8.) IE should now open and work fine.

Ive found that Winshow, Coolwebsearch and broswer hijackers to be the main causes
Of this issue.

24. Internet Explorer: Clicking on links does not bring up new window‏

Registering known flies did not resolve the issue nor did a Clean Boot.
We disabled 3rd party extensions and this resolved the issue.
Customer can now click on links and IE does open a new browser window with the
proper contents.

*** Problem Description ***
IE does not correctly translate/search addresses put in the address bar

eg: If you type in microsoft in the address bar, IE fails to search and does not
give you any search result. Instead it tries to go to an invalid URL like:
http:///?%20microsoft and errors out with Address not valid error

Default behavior is that IE will search for the keyword using the default search
provider and redirects you to the search page.

This can happen if IE cannot find the default Microsoft URL Search Hook
By default, the only entry under this key points to the Microsoft URL Search Hook,
which is implemented in shdocvw.dll
